The Best Colognes for Hampton Roads Weather, Season by Season

Hampton Roads weather is hard on a fragrance. Summers are hot and humid, which makes scents louder and heavier, and winters are cool and damp, which makes light scents disappear by lunch. Here's what we reach for in each season.

Summer: fresh, salty and green

Humidity makes fragrance project more, so in July and August go light and spray less than you think.

  • Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani: cold sea air, rosemary and mineral musk. Made for days on the water at Buckroe or the Oceanfront.
  • Torino21 by Xerjoff: mint, basil and lemon, cool and green as a summer morning.
  • Invictus Parfum by Rabanne: salty marine freshness, lavender and smooth sandalwood.
  • Y Eau de Toilette by Yves Saint Laurent: fresh sage and lavender with a clean, woody finish.
  • Erba Pura by Xerjoff: a crate of sunlit Mediterranean fruit over vanilla and white musk. Loud, so one or two sprays is plenty.

Spring and early fall: the all-rounders

When it's 60 to 75 degrees, you can wear almost anything. These work from the office to a night out.

Late fall and winter: warm and sweet

Cold air mutes fragrance, so this is the time for richer scents that last.
